ESL Lesson Plan: Character Descriptions

Aims

The aims of this lesson is to get the students to talk about a whole load more descriptions but this time more characteristic than physical. The lesson should also incorporate a fun game and test all of the things they have thus far learned about introductions, character and personality and so on.

Materials Needed

1) Classroom materials
2) Pictures of famous people
3) A blanket

Procedure

This is pretty much a revision lesson for what has been learnt previously but with one extra question with lots of variables.

Q: What sort of personality do you have?
A: I am __

There are many answers here and the ones I have chosen to use areā€¦
Lazy, funny, fun, outgoing, a good student, silly, naughty, badly behaved, professional, serious, not serious, friendly, crazy, psychotic, loud, quiet, happy, sad, independent, dependant, trustworthy, depressive.

To explain these just do a straight-forward translation in to your countries language. If you can’t do this then come up with a more dramatic way. I usually do this in quite an exhibitionist style and this style is perfectly suitable. When this is explained and the students have mastered the style play a game called Under the Blanket.

Game – Under The Blanket

Enlist 5 students from each house group and enlist 2 volunteers to hold up a large blanket. Give each of the students a name related to a personality or physical trait and let both teams see this name. After all the names are given tell the students to duck down. Then point to a random student from one team and tell that student to stand up. The other team must remember the students given name before you tell that student to sit down. If they guess correctly then this student is out. The team who dies first loses, the other team is the winner and should receive house-points.

After this is over give the students lots of pictures of famous people they have to describe and go through the motions of all the previous lessons. Also use your own photographs and do some hypothetical naming and so on until the lesson ends. Thus we are approaching the end of the students introductions and descriptions section.

Ideas for future lessons – Clothes, Fashion Show and Superstars.
