How to Deal with Culture Shock When Teaching English Abroad

Singapore TEFL

Moving overseas is a big step for anyone; especially teachers.

Culture shock affects everyone when making an overseas move; however, there are things you can do that will help such as obtaining several travel guides.

Travel guides can give you helpful information on religion, food, the country’s history and the landscape of the country. Travel guides also offer maps. It is important to become accustomed to the landscape of the country so that you can maneuver your way around safely and easily.

Another way that a teacher can deal with culture shock is by talking with those who are currently living in the country or those who have lived there. Talk with them about how the people dress, about housing and their local customs.

Most importantly, by understanding that you will experience culture shock, you will be giving your body and mind a “heads-up” on what will happen once you are there. Traveling and living overseas can be enjoyable but there will be adjustments that you will have to make.

One thing that will help you adjust is by taking part of your home with you such as a family photo album, some framed pictures of your family and some personal items such as pictures and trinkets that remind you of home and things that make you feel good when you look at them.

Most importantly, think about where you will be spending a great deal of time in your new home. For instance, if you enjoy cooking and feel happy and contented when cooking, then purchase some nice glasses, plates and cookware; items that will make you feel good when preparing meals.

To conclude, moving to teach English overseas is a big adjustment; however, by taking with you things that give you comfort and remind you of home, the transition will be easier and a bit smoother.
