ESL Lesson Plans: Colours, Objects and Positions

Learning Objective – to introduce vocabulary of familiar objects and consolidate knowledge of colours and positions, so that pupils can form sentences independently, describing an object and it’s position.

Introduction – 5 mins

Introduce the following vocab

Book
Pen
Pencil
Crayon
Ruler
Rubber
Pencil Case
Scissors
Folder
Box

Use objects as prompts. To begin with, hold the object up and say its name. Get the pupils to repeat orally. Write the word up on the board. Every so often hold up one of the objects without saying its name and ask the class ‘What is it?’

Once all the objects have been introduced, ask pupils to copy down the list. Once they have done so cover the board and ask them to shut their books. Hold the objects up to elicit the vocab orally.

Development – 20 mins

1) Revision of colours.

Using clue cards, ask the pupils ‘what colour is it?’ Elicit the following colours: red, yellow, blue, orange, green, pink, brown, black, white

Get pupils to write the colours on the board to check the spelling.

2) Describing objects

Hold up each object in turn and ask:
What is it?
What colour is it?
What colour is the ? Then ask pupils to form a sentence. The is . For the first object (the book) give the following example: ‘The book is black. It is a black book.’ The sequence of questions then continues as follows: 1) What is it? It is a box 2) What colour is the box? The box is ?
3) What is it? It is a _
box.
Get students to put up their hands to answer.

4) Position vocab – revision

Go to different places around the classroom and ask ‘Where am I?’ Get them to describe where you are eg next to the door, infront of the desk.

Make sure the following are covered:
Next to
Behind
In front of
In between
In the middle of
Near
to the right of
to the left of

Write the list on the board

5) Making sentences

Put for example a black book behind a student and give the following example:
The black book is behind is behind __.
Get the students to make sentences orally using this model by placing objects round the room.

Plenary – 5 mins

Hold up objects to revise vocab
Revise colours using the colour cue cards
Place a few objects round the room and ask them to describe where they are.
